Self-Identity
“Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken.” -Oscar Wilde
Identity is our overall idea of who we are. We define ourselves through our personal characteristics, qualities, and abilities. People identify themselves through different aspects like material things, hobbies and talents, social life, family etc. The establishment of identity takes place at different levels during the course of a person’s development. It is through this development that children get to understand who they are and their unique qualities. For example ‘What is their best color, best food, best fashion style etc.’ are some of the simple things that can help a child know their self-identity.
It is important for children to discover their self identity because:
- It helps define their principles and values
- It helps the child to stand up for themselves against bullies
- It gives a child a sense of belonging
- Helps the child have confidence in self and is able to identify his/her strength and weaknesses
- It keeps the child unique and distinguishes from everyone else.
- It helps get rid of insecurities a child may have and become comfortable with who they are
- It helps the child become more aware of his/her immediate environment and know their purpose in it.
Parents can help their children develop a healthy self-identity by:
- Accepting them for who they are
- Encouraging their strengths and good character
- Helping them appreciate other people’s needs and feelings
- Having them involved in healthy activities
- Creating a healthy family lifestyle
- Helping the child surround themselves with healthy people
- Talking and listening to your children
