Decision Making
How many times do you make decisions every day in your life? Probably countless! We decide when to wake up, what to wear, when to eat, when to exercise, whom to befriend, where to travel, how to behave and even to big decisions like careers and life partners etc. Decision making is a very important skill to a child’s life because he/she will face everyday life circumstances that will require him/her to choose or give more priority to one thing over the other.
Making a wrong decision may be very disappointing afterwards.
To make a wise decision you may need to have a process of evaluating the choices presented to you with a thought of the end result. It’s easier to eliminate choices that don’t resonate with your goal, but it is not always easy when there are two choices that are good for you or vice versa.
Here is a simple decision making process that you can use and even teach your child:
- Identify the problem– this will help you know the solution you need in order make a decision.
- Gather relevant information about the problem.
- Identify the alternatives of the choices given.
- Weigh each choice for example pros and cons.
- Choose the alternative that works well with you
- Take action.
The inability to make wise decisions may lead to missed opportunities. A good decision maker is able to identify what works for them when needed and therefore taking advantage of opportunities unlike a poor decision maker.
Decision making is important because:
- It makes it easier to achieve goals.
- It is a good way to properly utilize resources.
- It helps you pick the best choice possible.
- Some situations require you to act quickly and therefore you need to be able to choose the most workable choice for you as fast as possible.
- It does not allow for second guessing because you get results of your decision and not any other.
Do you feel ready to make wise decisions all the way? I hope this article was helpful.
